Check out the new EAL Certificate Program from the PTC! OFSAA Winter Championships opened the month of March with student-athletes getting vertical on the courts, wrestling up a storm on the mat, and cutting the waves in the pool. Congratulations to all student-athletes who competed on behalf of their schools and their regions! By now, I hope a good number of Sudburians are aware that Greater Sudbury will play host to the OFSAA Girls Hockey championships for the first time ever beginning Tuesday of next week and culminating with the last group of finals Friday. Here’s the Top 10 reasons, a la David Letterman, why we should all be excited about this event.

Gold sponsor Laurentian University is swinging open its doors to all accredited participants registered in the championship, offering free use of athletic facilities like the Olympic gold pool, climbing walls and gymnasium during their stay in Sudbury. Teen Sports Night at Science North. In conjunction with the hosting of OFSAA, Science North will be hosting a special Teen Sports Night on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p. Among the special features of this event: slapshot speed testing, accuracy shooting, NHL2014 PS3, shootout and a whole lot more. The big girls are coming to play. This event is actually two championships hosted side-by-side, providing plenty of action for all to see.

78 games over four competition days. The organizing committee was firm in its commitment to keep admission prices as low as humanly possible. Daily admission rates will be offered as well. When was the last time you were able to get into a provincial hockey championship for as little as that? Some nice little perks, thanks largely to the generosity of sponsors, like coaches gifts, player gift bags, photo accreditation and arena hospitality, will put a unique Sudbury stamp on this event and make it a positive and memorable experience for all those concerned. Four local teams have qualified to compete. Local gold sponsors like Skater’s Edge, VALE, Day Group, City of Sudbury and Laurentian University have stepped up and provided cash contributions or services in kind that will enable Sudbury to host the best championship possible.

Both St Charles and Notre-Dame managed to reach the quarter-final round at their respective OFSAA championships last year. Hopes are high that they’ll manage the same feat this year. Notre-Dame brought home a gold medal in 2008, will 2014 be the year for another? Sure will be interesting to find out. 1 reason to get excited about hosting OFSAA Girls Hockey 2014? Two-time Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Johnston will be in attendance as a keynote speaker at Tuesday night’s banquet.

OFSAA Nordic and Alpine Skiing Championships and Snowboard Festival immediately follow the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, giving student-athletes something to aspire to as they take the slopes. These snowy OFSAA events gather a large number of Ontario student-athletes, especially the cross country course that can gather close to 600 participants with skiis and poles. This story by Benjamin Aubé from the Timmins Press talks about the OFSAA experience and what it takes to put together a championship of this magnitude. TIMMINS – Rarely has the City of Timmins welcomed a sporting event on the scale of the 2014 OFSAA Nordic Championships. 24-26, nearly 600 of the best high school cross-country skiers from across the province will compete at the Porcupine Ski Runners for a spot at the top of the podium in both team and individual races. Participants from 85 school across the province have traveled from far and wide for the races, in addition to their families and coaches.

Event convenor John Labine said the sheer amount of skiers who take part in the Nordic Championships every year make it the third-largest high school sporting event in the country, and one of the largest cross-country ski meets in North America. Labine said he and more than 75 volunteers in the community chose to get involved in the championships because of the unique opportunity presented to them. He also thanked the city, as well as tourism co-ordinators Guy Lamarche and Mandy Wilson, for helping making the entire process of organizing the provincial championships a top-class event, and invited the general public to come out and watch the talent in action. There are about 75 volunteers or so involved, and it wouldn’t be possible without them. It’s all a little overwhelming when you’re organizing something of this scale, but it’s a great thing for everyone here, and it’s great for the city. The sporting community in Ontario and across Canada have lost a longtime leader of the football at all levels in the country.
