Hands down, toughest class I’ve taken. Callahan is a great professor BUT the work is extremely tough and you have to work your but off to get a good grade.
She is aware of how tough the course is though and provides very generous extra credit. Quizzes are extremely specific and very difficult. You definitely have a decent workload of readings each week, and the quizzes are super short, but they are tough! I love her enthusiasm, you can tell she really cares about humanities and she explains difficult concepts really well.
Take notes, show up to class, and put some effort in and you’ll do fine. Just finished this online humanities course. Wish I would have dropped it sooner. This was an introduction class and I struggled more than ever. This is not a normal 1000 level class that most people take just as an elective.
If you are not a humanities major I strongly suggest you look for another class because the work that goes into this will drain the life out of you. Her content quizzes are extremely specific and mostly based off lecture videos. I struggled hard to get a C. Vague grading criteria for video responses and projects make them confusing and time consuming to work on.
I’ve lost whole letter grades on assignments because of this. The content was really interesting and I actually feel like I learned what she was teaching, especially for it being all online. The assignments require a lot of time however, and this is taught more like a 3000 level rather than a 1000 level. I took this class with 4 other classes and was able to manage. Gives many chances for extra credit.
Teacher Guide To Learning Letters and Sounds
Very very heavy on online lectures, very difficult on grading too. Her ‘content quizzes’ are tests that ask for extremely specific words and phrases. The material itself isn’t too difficult, but the class is very time consuming. Not a fan of the video responses and the lack of clarity in grading criteria, but as long as you watch the lectures and use both attempts on the tests, you should be fine.
A few easy extra credit opportunities are available. If you don’t already love humanities, do NOT take this class you will hate your life. There is page after page of readings, tons of online lectures, and video responses after every module. This felt like a graduate class, no joke.
She expects you to make connections that an intro-level course doesn’t even teach. It’s a 1000 level but feels like a 5000 level course. If you’re taking more than 12 credits and you are NOT living off of your parent’s money and you actually have a life, prepare for a C. In all fairness the work isn’t HARD to do, just way too much for a 1000-level .
Worst professor I have ever had especially for an online class. If you do everything you are suppose to on an assignment you still will not get full credit. LOTS of busy work and reading. I have been on the deans list the past two semesters and this is the only class I have failed.
I started doing better in the class but too late. For a 1000-level course I had to put a lot of work into it, it was harder than my 3000-level humanities class I took in the spring. Wouldn’t take any of her classes ever again. Was more like a 6000 course not a 2000 one. DO not take if you are just trying to complete your FKL’s. Callahan is trying to prove a point by assigning vague projects and absurd assessments.
Save yourself some time and pick up a humanities class that does not assign pointless work just for the sake of assigning work. Callahan is absolutely NO help whatsoever. This online class consisted of several boring lecture videos. She talks way to fast and doesn’t use powerpoints.
5. Dropping out is both the norm and often temporary.
Her test were multiple choice, fill in the blank just horrible. She’s not the worst professor out there, but also not the best. I got an A and she is passionate for it, I just think her grading in the course was unnecessary. She makes the class interesting and her lectures usually end early. But she is a tough grader and gives multiple assignments within a restricted time. Don’t buy all the books since she has some of them online for you.
She’s not the worst but she definitely makes you work for your grade. It is a very interesting class, that I am never bored in. This professor will not give you an A just to prove that you can’t get all A’s in college. The content itself is interesting but she’s overwhelming.
