A leading mental health body has called for warning symbols to accompany airbrushed pictures of models and celebrities to help combat eating disorders. The Royal College of Psychiatrists said a kite mark on digitally enhanced photographs would raise awareness of how often such manipulation takes place and help stop people trying to achieve ‘unattainable physical perfection’. The college urged the next Government to set up a forum, made up of politicians, experts, and representatives from the media and advertising, for the development of an editorial ethical code.

Consultant psychiatrist Dr Adrienne Key, of the college’s eating disorders section, said the media must be stopped from ‘glamorising’ excessive weight-loss and adding to the psychological and social pressures faced by young people. She said: ‘What we need to do is raise people’s awareness of what they are looking at. A lot of people have no idea how much manipulation goes on. She said there was mounting evidence to show the role of the media in the development of eating disorders, particularly in adolescents and young people. And she added: ‘The aims of the forum should be to collaboratively develop an ethical editorial code that realistically addresses the damaging portrayal of eating disorders, raises awareness of unrealistic visual imagery created through airbrushing and digital enhancement, and also addresses the skewed and erroneous content of magazines. In its ‘Call for Action’ the college also called for mass media ‘role models’ with diverse weights, shapes and ages, and a ban on the use of underweight models. It urged the media to stop publishing ‘body critical’ articles targeting celebrities for being overweight, underweight or physically imperfect.

Susan Ringwood, chief executive of beat, a charity combating eating disorders, said: ‘We welcome this call to action from the Royal College of Psychiatrists. The media is a powerful influence and we know how vulnerable some people at risk of eating disorders can be to its visual images in particular. We know there is more that can be done to make that influence a positive one, and adopting the recommendations of the college’s statement would be an important step. A top doctor has called for warnings to be put on the front of hair dye packs because they contain chemicals that can cause serious allergic reactions, which in turn could prove fatal. Since 2011, two British women have died in cases linked to the dyes, which are used by millions each year. Leading cosmetics companies including L’Oreal and Clairol use potentially dangerous compounds in scores of their hair dyes. Dr Ian White, a dermatologist at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, undertook the most comprehensive review of the chemicals yet.

One medium-brown dye in Clairol’s Nice ’n Easy range contains six such compounds, The Mail on Sunday has found. Allergic reactions to these chemicals can include burning sensations, an itchy scalp, flaking skin and rashes. In rare cases they can cause the face to swell up, hair loss and breathing problems. Since November 2011, manufacturers have had to place warnings on the side of hair dye packs under European Union regulations.

These say that each time a person dyes their hair, they should carry out an allergy patch test beforehand. But Dr White believes the warnings are not prominent enough. The new warning is on the side,’ he told The Mail on Sunday. It doesn’t hit you in the face like a cigarette warning does. We need to make the warnings explicit. Consumers are not as effectively protected as they should be.

Yet the European Commission estimates that between one in 50 and one in 100 people who use hair dyes suffer from an allergic reaction to them at some point. An investigation by this newspaper found Clairol’s Nice ’n Easy Natural Medium Brown dye contains six of the chemicals on the SCCS list of those that might not be safe. L’Oreal Excellence Crème Natural Mahogany Brown contains three, while its Garnier Nutrisse Crème Dark Golden Brown product includes two. She suffered heart failure and brain damage, and spent a year in a coma before dying last November. In neither case was it proven that chemicals in the dyes were to blame. However, personal injury lawyers say they are hearing from far more consumers on the issue. The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association, which represents hair dye manufacturers, said all dyes underwent extensive safety tests to prove they are not toxic or carcinogenic and that the existing warnings were sufficient.

We are confident the warnings and advice on our product packs are sufficient to inform people of the risks and they clearly state the importance of carrying out an allergy test 48 hours before using the colorant. An EC spokesman said it was not the job of their scientific advisers to dictate how best to protect consumers. In general, hair dyes are safe. Only in rare cases can they cause allergic reactions.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh is urging people to stay away from a planned Free Speech Rally scheduled for Saturday on Boston Common. Walsh made the comments Friday as he discussed security for the event alongside Boston Police Commissioner William Evans and Gov. The mayor said he has spoken with the Southern Poverty Law Center for guidance on how to handle events involving white supremacists. They recommend that people should not confront these rallies. So we’re urging everyone to stay away from the Common. A total of 500 police officers will be present at the rally, and several hundred more are available if necessary.

Fencing and security cameras were installed on Boston Common’s Parkman Bandstand Friday morning as police continue safety preparations ahead of Saturday’s planned rally. City officials approved a permit earlier this week for the rally, organized by the Boston Free Speech Coalition. The permit allows rallygoers to begin setting up at 10 a. The rally is expected to begin at noon. The courts have made it abundantly clear. They have the right to gather, no matter how repugnant their views are.

But they don’t have the right to create unsafe conditions. They have the right to free speech. In return, they have to respect our city. At the same time, we can’t look away. The children of our city are watching, and I want everyone who goes to the Common tomorrow to understand that. The young people of our city are watching TV, are following this. We have to make it clear what we stand for in the City of Boston.

A large counter-protest is also expected at the event. The sides will be separated by barriers, Boston Police said. Tomorrow is one more chapter in that honored tradition, and we’re going to do everything we can to make sure tomorrow is about liberty and justice, freedom and peace, and yes the right for people to peacefully assemble. Thomas Robb, the national director of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, told the Boston Herald that some members from the Springfield area are planning to attend Saturday’s Rally. No weapons, sticks, or flagpoles will be allowed in the area. A full list of prohibited items is available on the Boston Police website. Boston Common vendors have been asked to close for the day.

As a precaution, the Frog Pond and swan boats will be closed as well. That’s just an unfortunate circumstance, but we’ll deal with it. Tremont Street will be closed at about 10:30 a. There will be zero tolerance for any violence tomorrow. The rally comes one week after clashes between white supremacists and counter-protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia.

One woman was killed when a car drove into a crowd of demonstrators. Commissioner Evans: “We should be showing unity” against white supremacy, not “be at each others’ throats. Organizers for the Boston Free Speech Rally said they condemn white supremacists and have no association with the groups involved in the Charlottesville clashes. Monica Cannon, founder of a group called Violence In Boston that is among the sponsors of the Fight Supremacy counter-protest, held a press conference on Friday. I’m a black woman living in Roxbury. For many years I feel like they ignored the problem. Ignoring a problem has never made it go away.

I think it’s an obligation morally, but as a community member also to resist it. Well, let’s see if the BPD can keep the two groups separated. Charlottesville’s police chose not to and mayhem ensued. The Police had the groups separated at that time. They had the speakers in the park then forced them to leave into the waiting arms of the ANTIFA mob.

Why would Police directly decide to cause a riot? They knew for months people where going to talk in the park, they also knew there was going to be counter protestors. This is makes as much sense as calling the fire department to your house, only to have them proceed to burn it to the ground. The police are active participants in the destruction of USA.

Painful history

Yes, I had a friend in Cville, she can confirm that indeed the police funneled their group into a bunch of communist ANTIFA goons. Violence seems to have been wanted by someone or ones there. The democrats are illegally assembling WITHOUT a permit, just to cause a riot. Southern Poverty Law Center is giving advice? What do they know about crowd control?

The DC Police are old hand at controlling mobs, and Cleveland did a good job during the convention. Looks like another democrat disaster in the waiting. The Mayor is probably preparing a speech blaming Trump in advance. What is the purpose of having a free speech rally?

What exactly does this group need to prove? 500 cops for 100 folks attending a free speech rally, a permitted one at that? I’m not defending the beliefs of the NN crowd here but I DO defend their right to assemble and speak. No wait, the Bill of Rights do that. A group wants to have a free speech rally.

THAT is why a free speech rally is needed. Normal people spend their Saturday with their families. I saw the old lady waving the flag trying to provoke a reaction and get dragged like an idiot. What the hell is grandma doing in the middle of this mess?
