The ecological theory of development was created by a Russian American psychologist named Urie Bronfenbrenner. He developed the theory based on his belief that all children grow and develop differently based on their environmental factors and the situations surrounding those environmental factors. Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory focuses on one’s development in the events of inside and outside layers of development. His studies and research have shown how children’s development is affected by their environment. His theory shows how environmental influences have an effect on the development of an individual and it focuses on the relationships between a child and the transforming environment. Erik Erikson presented eight stages of human development, which last throughout an entire life-span. Throughout each developmental stage, each developmental task presents a catastrophe for the individual. Each of Erikson’s developmental stages is presented in such a way that the negatives and positives are clearly defined. However two are predominant and stand symbiotically on the pages and in the intent of the curriculum.

In the following essay I will analyse and critique three theories of learning and development and their application to teaching infants or toddlers in Aotearoa. The three theories that I have chosen are the Social Cultural theory by Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky, the Cognitive development theory by Swish developmental psychologist Jean Piaget and lastly the attachment theory by American developmental psychologist Mary Ainsworth.
