Teaching children the Word of God is the only way of preparing them to make the most important decision of their lives—where they will spend eternity.
Because it is so important to shape and guide children, God has given them the capacity to receive and understand spiritual truths from an early age. Children are trusting by nature and will believe whatever adults tell them—be it fairy tales, arbitrary facts or Bible stories. They believe the miracles in the Bible without question and find it easy to talk to their unseen friend Jesus. Children are also keen to discover and learn new things.
They easily learn new songs and Bible verses and they love to listen to stories. But where does one start, and is it enough to keep telling children the same Bible stories? Bible stories in the right order, but realizing how the truths of the Bible form part of their everyday lives. A child is never too young to hear about creation, about God’s love, about Jesus, and about the many wonderful Bible stories. There is no specific order in which stories need to be told. Every story helps us to get to know what God is like, what we are like, and the way God wants us to live.
A house without a foundation is unstable and, eventually, it will start to crack and crumble. Relating this analogy to our spiritual lives, the facts we learn from the Bible are the foundation stones upon which our spiritual insight is based. God’s Word, our spiritual lives stand on shaky ground. Facts from the Bible can be taught from the earliest years of a child because these relate to the characters and events that make up the many well-loved stories. At a young age when children are not yet able to differentiate between fact and fiction. The Bible is true—it is not just another story book. Get ideas and topics for teaching preschoolers from the illustrated devotion, I believe. A solid foundation without a house built on it has no real purpose. The Bible is far more than a historic record of events—it is God’s Word to us. As such, every event and teaching in the Bible has been included for a reason.

To keep children from ‘switching off’ at the end of the story, highlight a specific truth or make a quick detour to a relevant application as you tell it. You could say something like, “Can you imagine what Gideon must have been thinking? The importance of making the Bible exciting and real to a child cannot be overemphasized. Unless the Bible is relevant to the everyday life of a child and unless the child develops a meaningful relationship with God, the Bible stories he or she has been taught may eventually be equated with fables and childhood stories.

You can create your own lesson or your own curriculum based on this simple guideline. Because the Bible is the Living Word of God, any and every part of the Bible can be used to help children grow in character and faith – “Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ” Romans 10:17. In a prayerful attitude, let the Holy Spirit guide you as you consider the needs of the children you teach. Today my class was featured in an article in The Edmond Sun. The reporter discussed our growing class brain in her article. This has prompted questions from other interested teachers, so I’ve decided to give an update. Earlier this school year I was inspired by one of my BrainSMART classes to create a lesson on metacognition.
I did a post about the lesson here: metacognition lesson. In that lesson, students twisted pipe cleaners together to represent related concepts and subjects. We periodically gather around the brain to reflect on new learning and how it connects to what the students already know. When a student proposes a new connection, I give the student three pipe cleaners to twist into an axon. I connect the new axons to the brain myself.
The more complex the brain gets, the more difficult it is for 2nd graders to get into it. Upper-grade students might not have this issue. I write the labels myself to help me keep track of things. I write the label on both sides of the small paper so it can be seen from more than one viewpoint.
That becomes very important later as the brain gets more complex! Hang the brain low enough where students can interact with it, in a location with no regular traffic. It is difficult to see the complexity. By using this method, we are continually reviewing things learned all year. For example, when studying China, students made a connection from the invention of paper to an earlier lesson on Sequoyah since Sequoyah invented a writing system for the Cherokee people. To add to the fun, former students of mine come by frequently to see the brain grow. They are intrigued by the connections and beg to make their own.
This metacognition lesson continues to be wildly successful. This has provided a fun way to review and solidify learning all year. Very cool representation of how learning is connected in our brains. Love the idea that the kids revisit their learning by following the connections! Love this idea – we speak to connections all the time when reading – when doing math, science, social studiesthis would make the connections more visual for them. I’m willing to bet they’ll keep those connections because of the class brain!

I love that this teaches kids the concept of tying new information into something they already know. This is a great study skill for them to add to their tool kit.
