Thursday, 12-Apr-roland G. Fryer, Jr. 02:14:46 CEST A Short Reflection on Books Most books on minerals are field guides and “picture books”. They can help to identify your specimen and to learn something about their properties, but they don’t get you anywhere beyond that. I strongly recommend to get and read textbooks on geology and mineralogy.

They don’t sort minerals just by their color, but deal with the topic systematically. Recommended Books I’d like to recommend a few books that I found worth reading. In accordance with what I’ve written above, some of them are textbooks on geology, and only a few deal specifically with quartz. A well written introductory textbook on physical geology with lots of figures. The Solid Earth – An Introduction to Global Geophysics, by C. This book has nothing to do with quartz but is about the inner workings of the planet earth, and it clearly addresses expert readers and undergraduate students of geology. However, I had more than one aha experience when reading it, so for those of you who “want to know”, it is listed.

This book is a very nice introduction into petrology and its methods and is mentioned because it is a very notable exception from German scientific literature: it has been written with the reader in mind. The System of Mineralogy of J. The first comprehensive and still best English monography on silica minerals. Die Eigenheiten von Bergkristall, Rauchquarz, Amethyst, Chalcedon, Achat, Opal und anderen Varietäten, by Rudolf Rykart. From the collector’s point of view, still “The Book” on quartz, in particular when it comes to crystal morphology.

As far as I know, there is no recent English quartz monography that is a match for it. The book has unfortunately not yet been translated from German. Silica – Physical behavior, geochemistry and materials applications, by P. This is a collection of reviews on silica structures and properties, including those of quartz, by various authors. The articles are referenced individually in the text of these web pages and are accordingly listed under “Articles”. The book can be regarded as a scientific publication.

Buchanan identified as a socialist in his youth and was unaware of the University of Chicago’s strong market-oriented approach to economics.

His studies there, particularly under Frank H. Knight, converted him to “a zealous advocate of the market order”. Buchanan was the founder of a new Virginia school of political economy. 1968, where he founded the Thomas Jefferson Center for Studies in Political Economy.

From 1955 to 1956 he was a Fulbright Scholar in Italy. In 1983, a conflict with Economics Department head Daniel M. In 1988 Buchanan returned to Hawaii for the first time since World War II and gave a series of lectures later published by the University Press. Buchanan’s work focused on public finance, the public debt, voting, rigorous analysis of the theory of logrolling, macroeconomics, constitutional economics, and libertarian theory.

Buchanan died January 9, 2013, in Blacksburg, Virginia, at age 93. Buchanan’s legacy lives on through a fellowship program at the University Honors College of Middle Tennessee State University. Buchanan was largely responsible for the rebirth of political economy as a scholarly pursuit. He emphasized that public policy cannot be considered solely in terms of distribution, but is instead always a matter of setting the rules of the game that engender a pattern of exchange and distribution.

Buchanan’s important contribution to constitutionalism is his development of the sub-discipline of constitutional economics. According to Buchanan the ethic of constitutionalism is a key for constitutional order and “may be called the idealized Kantian world” where the individual “who is making the ordering, along with substantially all of his fellows, adopts the moral law as a general rule for behaviour”. In it, he writes that the costs to individuals determine what the price of a good or service is. Buchanan is considered to be a quasi-member of the Austrian school of economics, not formally associated with the school but sharing many common beliefs. As Buchanan puts it: “I certainly have a great deal of affinity with Austrian economics and I have no objections to being called an Austrian. James Buchanan is considered the architect of Public Choice Theory.

Bringing teachers up to speed on coding

In fact, his work within Public Choice earned him the Nobel Prize in Economic Science in 1986. Public Choice Theory focuses on people’s decision making process within the political realm. Buchanan used both the fields of economics and political science to help develop Public Choice. Monbiot also argued that Buchanan worked to impede desegregation, and assisted Augusto Pinochet’s regime in writing the 1980 Constitution of Chile. Economics is the study of the whole system of exchange relationships. A listing of Buchanan’s publications from 1949 to 1986 can be found at the Scandinavian Journal of Economics, 1987, vol.
